Thieves take 100 tricycles destined for kids in need from SF Firefighters Toy Program

There’s a Grinch roaming San Francisco’s streets, and he’s likely on a tricycle.

Officials with the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program told KPIX-5 that "a thief or thieves" broke into their storage unit and stole over 100 tricycles just days before they were to be given out to kids in need. Sally Calazza, the program’s lead, said she discovered the theft early Tuesday when she arrived to find the lock had been cut and the trikes were gone.

They were worth thousands of dollars.

"It’s frustrating, because we work so hard to get stuff for the kids and we are working harder because of COVID,” Volunteer Coordinator Jill Peeler said.

Monday was to be the program’s first day of toy distribution.

The Toy Program, which has been in operation since 1949, had already reshuffled its set-up earlier this year to accomplish its goals while accommodating COVID-19 protocols.

Security footage may provide clues as to what happened.

In the meantime, Calazza told ABC7 the program would gladly take the trikes back "no questions asked."
