Prosecutors on Monday charged 39-year-old Lamar Bursey of Hayward with two counts of felony criminal threats, according to the criminal complaint emailed to KCBS Radio.
Bursey had been placed on academic suspension for an unspecified incident which occurred on April 14.
One week later, on April 21 at 5:56 a.m., Bursey allegedly sent an email to multiple UC Berkeley staff members where he told them they were his "resources" and he would be in his "office" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the document. It’s unclear what "office" he was referring to.
He then told the recipients to "stop playing" with him.
"Depending on who I feel was helping or not, 2 people on this email will get shot," the email stated. He told recipients to consider the email a "proimssery (sic) note."
The email made one of the recipients "scared for his life and the life of others," the document stated. He feared there was nothing stopping Bursey from "coming onto campus and causing harm to UC staff." The unnamed victim allegedly emailed his supervisor and said, "I will not be back on campus as long as this person is a threat to my life."
As a result of the email, officials locked down UC Berkeley's campus from around 9:30 a.m. to shortly before 2 p.m. for what they called a "credible campus-wide threat" where a person wanted to harm specific individuals.
Bursey was found that day at Summit Hospital Oakland and taken into custody without incident at 1:46 p.m.
Bursey remains in jail and has a plea hearing scheduled for May 2.
