As VTA workers grieve and the transit agency rebuilds in the wake of the May 26 mass shooting, some riders are growing impatient.
Service for the light rail system, suspended for the last month and a half since the shooting, is set to resume by the end of the month according to a timeline released by VTA last week.
However for some riders, speaking up during a meeting Tuesday held by the VTA to review the plan, that reopening can’t come soon enough.
"I had to take three buses instead of a light rail and a bus, so it takes me longer to get to work," one rider said.
Another frustrated customer told the VTA Board of Directors, “the other half of the compassion that’s needed here is the ridership.”
As the transit agency prepares to return to service, it’s faced a range of daunting tasks including preparing temporary operations facilities, hiring new staff and counseling traumatized workers.
In recognition of those challenges, some residents spoke up for the VTA during the session.
"To the members of the public that are listening to this, please have more compassion for everyone at VTA. Now’s really our turn to show our support for them by being patient here," one meeting attendee pleaded.
