Valley Transportation Authority aims to resume light rail service by the end of July, about two months after the deadly mass shooting at the transit agency's rail yard in San Jose.

Trains have not been running since May 26 when an employee killed nine colleagues before turning the gun on himself.

Workers who rely on light rail have now been relegated to taking the bus, or walking when necessary over the last couple of months.

According to reporting by KTVU, VTA officials have a five-phase plan for resuming service. The first phase wrapped up last week when some of the 300-yard employees returned to collect personal items.

Phase two is assessing and repairing the damage done to two buildings and hiring new employees.

The third phase will see employees returning to work, and engineers inspecting equipment and lines.

The fourth phase is running trains to complete testing without passengers, and service would resume in full in the fifth phase.

"We lost over half of the way, power, and signal team," said VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress. "High skill set. Hard to fill positions.”

In addition to resuming service, VTA managers will also look at adjusting the schedule of trains to better fit demand.

More details are expected to be presented at a special meeting of the VTA board on Thursday.
