Caltrans hopes to get Highway 1 south of Big Sur back open by early summer, weather permitting.

The agency made the announcement Thursday on Twitter, explaining it planned to rebuild the impacted portion of the scenic California road, located at mile marker 30 at Rat Creek south of Esalen, "with large embankment and new pipes for more drainage capacity."

The highway was completely washed out during heavy rains in late January, providing some nearly unbelievable footage of Highway 1.

The damage appeared to have taken place over a couple of days.

The project will cost an estimated $11.5 million.

While the road was heavily damaged during the wet storms, much of the coast appeared to have dodged major mudslides, as was feared.
