The search continues for two Petaluma children swept out at sea along the Sonoma County Coast over the weekend.

One parent survived the ordeal. The children’s father did not.

Over two dozen people are scouring the beaches searching for the young son and daughter. For the third day, searchers are combing the coastline at Blind Beach, an area along Highway 1 near Goat Point not far from the town of Jenner. Monte Rio Fire District Chief Steve Baxman was one of the first on the scene after the children were swept out to sea during heavy surf Sunday afternoon.

"We walked down the path and approached some lifeguards," he described. "They were doing CPR on the victim out of the water. His wife was sitting on a sock completely soaked trying to tell us what’s going on."

The father, 40-year-old Michael Wyman of Petaluma, tried to hold on to his four-year-old son, but the boy was swept away. The dad later died.

Their seven-year-old daughter also remains missing.

"Every day the lifeguards and the sheriff’s office walk all the beaches, look off the bluffs and then the helicopter goes out a couple times a day and they search the waters along the coast," Baxman said.

It was the second such incident over the weekend.

A 45-year-old man was swept out to sea along the Mendocino coastline.

"It’s just tough on us, because it’s dangerous conditions, people are told it’s dangerous conditions and they still go down and get close to the water when they shouldn’t."
