California officials on Saturday reported a new single-day high of 695 COVID-19 deaths.
That brings the state's death toll since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic to 29,233, according to the California Department of Public Health.
The previous single-day high for COVID-19 fatalities was 585 on December 31, 2020.
On Saturday, the state reported 52,636 new cases, bringing its pandemic total to 2,621,277 infections.
The somber record follows the news that CDPH officials extended the Bay Area's stay-at-home order indefinitely due to the continued surge, which has overwhelmed the region's hospitals.
