California experienced its hottest July on record last month, making history at an average of 5.3 degrees above normal.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the median monthly temperature in July was 80 degrees, while June’s average temperature was 6.8 degrees above normal at 75 degrees.
The overall monthly numbers are calculated based on averages of daily high and low temperatures across the state.
Despite the sweltering state average, the Bay Area did not experience this heat increase.
In fact, San Francisco experienced its coldest July 12 since 1912, reaching a maximum high of 57 degrees.
The Bay Area coast has the marine layer to thank for unseasonably cool weather.
