The funding would be used for increased behavioral health treatment, prison reentry resources, addiction treatment and to aid victims of crime, as well as to ensure that people feel safe while spending time in downtown Sacramento.

"We just put $8.1 million of city money through the American Rescue Plan into what we call 'Clean and Safe Sacramento,'" Steinberg said, hoping to add another $3 billion to the millions the city has put down.

Steinberg is joined by Democratic state lawmakers and criminal justice reform advocates in calling for the immediate and substantial investments in crime prevention. The public request comes just days after six people were killed and 12 others were injured on K Street in Sacramento.

With a $30 billion surplus ahead of next month's budget revisions, California has the money to afford the mayor's request, however the request is one of several that Newsom will consider.
