PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Former U.S. Attorney William McSwain has announced he is running for governor of Pennsylvania, and he is asking former President Donald Trump for support.
In a letter sent to Mr. Trump on June 9, a letter the former president released Monday, McSwain said he believes there were irregularities in the 2020 election and he wanted to investigate, but Attorney General Bill Barr ordered him not to.
In the letter, McSwain claims that Gov. Tom Wolf, former Secretary of the Commonwealth Kathy Boockvar and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court "made up their own rules and did not follow the law."
McSwain served as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2018 until January of this year.
He said one of his first priorities as governor would be to “modernize” Pennsylvania’s election system.
"That means no ballot harvesting, undated ballots, unsigned ballots, ballots collected after Election Day (other than legitimate military and overseas absentee ballots), obstacles to poll watchers observing the counting of ballots, different rules in different counties, and, of course, no ballot stuffing of the kind that I previously prosecuted. It also means responsible voter ID legislation," he said in the letter.
He said he’s uniquely positioned to defeat state Attorney General Josh Shapiro, whom he calls the likely Democratic nominee.
