Authorities investigate a loud ‘boom’ in Allegheny County

At around 11 a.m. on New Year’s Day, a “loud boom” shook the Pittsburgh area, according to the Allegheny County Twitter page.

The county said emergency operators have receive reports of the boom shaking the South Hills.

“We have confirmed that there was no seismic activity and no thunder/lightning. At this point, we have no explanation for the reports, but agencies are continuing to look,” said the county.

According to KDKA T.V., the boom was first heard around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. People reached out to the station and went on social media looking for answers in addition to calling 911.

The boom was not caused by construction at Pittsburgh International Airport, said the outlet.

No evidence of earthquake or similar seismic activity has been found by KDKA meteorologists not has any been recorded through the United States Geological Survey.

“There is no word on any current injuries or danger related to this incident,” said KDKA.
