The FBI recently named Michael D. Nordwall Special Agent in Charge for its Pittsburgh Field Office.
Pittsburgh is the latest of several stops for Nordwall, who most recently served as a section chief in the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington D.C.
"I'm very excited to be here in Pittsburgh," Nordwall said at a meeting with Pittsburgh media Wednesday. "It's a great office. There's great work that happens here. It's a great community."
Nordwall has been in Pittsburgh for about a month, and says discussions continue about the priorities for the office.
"I can say from all of the offices that I've been in, everyone's a little different," he said. "The threats are a little different. The priorities are a little different, but one thing that's always key is partnerships. I have not been in a field office where I've seen stronger partnerships, certainly among the law enforcement agencies, the state and locals, as I've seen here in Pittsburgh."
Nordwall said he'll work to continue building those partnerships, which are key for tackling issues like violent crime.
Growing violent crime continues to be an alarming trend across the country, including in Pittsburgh.
"To collectively bring all of our capabilities and authorities together, whether that's ATF, DEA, all of the federal partners, along with our state and local, and identify what's our strategy," he said. "How can we have the most impact bringing all of our capabilities and resources together?"
He added some of his priorities will be violent crime, domestic terrorism and forming community connections.
Nordwall said around 50 percent of the FBI's domestic terrorism cases stemmed from tips.
"It's important to get that message out," he said. "Don't be that person. If you see something that makes your stomach turn or the hairs on your neck stand up, report it to law enforcement."
Nordwall has been with the FBI since 2002. Prior to joining, he graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and worked in the petrochemical industry.
