Planning a road trip Memorial Day weekend? Expect to pay more at the pump.
In fact, AAA says travelers can expect to see the highest gas prices since 2014.
The average price for a gallon of gas in western Pennsylvania is $3.178. This same week in 2020, the average was $2.342 a gallon.
According to the AAA Gas Prices website, Pennsylvania's average is higher than the national average by about 13 cents.
The keystone state also has the 10th highest price per gallon for both regular and midgrade gasoline compared to all other states.
“AAA expects 37 million Americans to travel, mostly by car and plane, for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That is a 60% increase over last year’s holiday and a strong indication that summer travel is going to be largely popular,” said Jeanette McGee, AAA spokesperson. “With the increase in travel demand, gas prices are going to be expensive no matter where you fill up, so plan ahead. The AAA app can help to find the best price.”
In addition, the organization says to expect some travel destinations to be low on fuel, but not entirely without fuel like some areas saw following the recent shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline.
