He was a supervisor in the motorcycle unit and a 24-year veteran of the Bureau of Police.

"I've known Rick for more than 20 years and had the pleasure of working with him at Zone 6 and at SDD. He also volunteered many times for various Special Olympics events. He was a good man, cop, father, and husband. He will be missed dearly," said Chief Scott Schubert.

Howe is survived by his wife and three children. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Howe is the second Pittsburgh officer to die from the virus.

47-year-old Brian Rowland died days after he was hospitalized in late September.

There's no word if either of the officers were vaccinated.

Public Safety says just 61 percent of the force has had COVID shots.

Elsewhere, a Pennsylvania State Trooper out of King of Prussia has died after being hospitalized with COVID.

According to the PA State Troopers Association, Trooper Dung X. Martin died on Thursday.

The 57-year-old enlisted in the State Police in 2000.
