Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s press office took a swipe at former President Donald Trump Thursday after he expressed sympathy for Capitol rioters, calling him a “twice-impeached Florida retiree,” according to The Hill.

Over the past few weeks, Trump has been holding campaign-style events and even hinted to Sean Hannity that he is possibly planning to run in the 2024 election. During an event Wednesday in Bedminster, N.J., he told attendees he thought there was “no reason” for police to shoot one of the rioters who broke into the Capitol building on Jan. 6, said the Washington Post.

“It was an unfortunate event. I say, though, however, people are being treated unbelievably unfairly,” said Trump, according to the Huffington Post. He also incorrectly asserted that “there were no guns at the Capitol” on Jan. 6.

Rioters were calling for both Pelosi, a Democrat, and Republican Vice President Mike Pence to be killed if they allowed President Joe Biden from being officially declared the winner of the 2020 election. So far, more than 500 people have been arrested for participating, some belonging to an identified hate group.

“Twice-impeached Florida retiree — and de facto leader of the Republican Party — Donald Trump joined House Republicans today in disrespecting the Capitol Police and other law enforcement officers, who valiantly defended the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, decrying how rioters 'are being treated unbelievably unfairly' now that they are facing legal consequences for their actions,” the Speaker's office said in a statement,” said the Pelosi press office statement.

Trump was impeached twice, first for allegations of foreign interference in the 2020 election and second for his role in inspiring the Capitol riots.
Neither resulted in a conviction. He lives with family at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla.

After attempts to form a bipartisan congressional investigation commission into the Jan. 6 attacks fell apart due to a lack of Republican support, the House of Representatives – which now has a Democratic majority – voted last week to create a special committee to probe the attack.

“Like Donald, House Republicans have shown time and time again that they stand with traitors — not with our law enforcement," the Speaker's office said this week.
