The discovery of a severed head inside a freezer at a home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania led to the arrest of a 32-year-old man for suspected murder.

Police say the situation unfolded Wednesday morning after they were called to an apartment to "check on an emotional subject" who was concerned for the welfare of a family member after finding a severed head inside a freezer.

The woman told arriving officers that she had just spoken to Donald Meshey Jr., who told her there was a head inside the freezer and a cadaver in his father's bed. She told police that she saw the head and believed it belonged to one of her family members.

Police then located Meshey, who "escorted the officer inside the residence and took the officer to the kitchen, where he proceeded to remove what appeared to be a human head from the freezer to show the officer," Lancaster City Police said in a statement.

Meshey was taken back to the police station, where he told detectives "he found what he described as a 'cadaver doll' in his father's bedroom, which looked and sounded like his father." Police say Meshey admitted to stabbing the "doll" for two to three minutes and then dismembering the body.

Police are still working to identify the victim. The Lancaster County Coroner's Office did confirm that the head from the freezer was in fact a human head.

Meshey was arrested and is being held without bail on charges including criminal homicide, abuse of a corpse and tampering with of fabricating physical evidence. A formal arraignment is pending.

The incident remains under investigation.
