ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - We know Adam Wainwright had a pretty darn good month of August. Apparently, it was the best month of any pitcher in the National League (and probably all of baseball).
The St. Louis Cardinals' 40-year-old was named the NL Pitcher of the Month for his performances in six starts. He was 5-1 with a 1.43 ERA 36 strikeouts and only six walks allowed. In 44 innings he gave up just seven runs.
Wainwright's best game was a two-hit shutout in Pittsburgh on Aug. 11. He even recorded two hits himself in the game.
In 26 starts this season, Wainwright is 13-7 with a 2.97 ERA and an MLB-leading three complete games.
This is the first time since September 2014 that he's been named the NL Pitcher of the Month. And he kept his team in a playoff race. St. Louis, as of Thursday afternoon, is 2.5 games back in the Wild Card race.
