Mike Shannon enters final week of Cardinals broadcasts before retirement

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - As if there wasn't already enough history in the making for the St. Louis Cardinals this week, we can't forget that we only have a handful of games left with Mike Shannon on the microphone.

He said on KMOX this morning that he has only five games left. Then he'll call it a career.

"The matter of fact is that I've got five games left. Period. It's over after that," Shannon says. His last game will be Sunday when the Cardinals host the Cubs for the final game of the regular season.

The 82-year-old has been in the broadcast booth for 50 years with the Cardinals – he's only the sixth announcer in MLB history to log at least 50 years with one team. It's the fourth-longest active tenure among Major League Baseball announcers behind Jamie Jarrín (Dodgers, 1959), Denny Matthews (Royals, 1969) and Bob Uecker (Brewers, 1971).

There's a big celebration planned on Sunday, with a commemorative t-shirt giveaway, postgame party and plenty of in-game moments to honor him.

The Cardinals are one game away from clinching a playoff spot for the third season in a row.
