ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Although he is just one of the many St. Louis Cardinals players currently out due to injury, it would be a big morale boost to see catcher Yadier Molina back in the starting lineup as early as Wednesday.

Molina isn't one of the 10 players currently on the Injured List, but has been held out of game action since taking a ball off his knee on Saturday. He was said to have a bruised knee.

Manager Mike Shildt said on Tuesday he's optimistic that Molina, 38, can be back in the starting lineup on Wednesday. He's also available in an emergency situation to play Tuesday. St. Louis begins a two-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight.

Some of the 10 players currently on the IL for St. Louis are starting pitchers Jack Flaherty, Miles Mikolas and Kwang-Hyun Kim, starting shortshop Paul DeJong, starting centerfield Harrison Bader, possible closer Jordan Hicks, and starting pitcher Dakota Hudson – who's out for the season with Tommy John surgery. The San Francisco Giants (16), who own the best record in baseball, have the most players currently on the IL.

Molina will turn 39 on July 13, but continues to defy Father Time. Among NL catchers who have played in at least 40 games this season, he's first in RBI (27), fourth in average (.277), tied for third in home runs (7) and 6th in OPS (.808). Last week, he made his 1,955th career start at catcher – the fifth most all-time in Major League Baseball.
