(KMOX) - After Yadier Molina added to his championship trophy case this weekend, might the free agent catcher be close to signing a deal with a Major League Baseball team for 2021? His latest Instagram post might be hinting that he's ready.
On Monday morning, the former St. Louis Cardinals catcher said, "It's time to ... 🤔! Thank you God! 🙏🏻" in a post on Instagram with a smiling selfie. Maybe he's just showing off his diamond-studded watch. Or maybe it's about something else.
On Sunday, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told our Tom Ackerman that he's still working with both Molina and free agent pitcher Adam Wainwright on deals for them to return to St. Louis.
“I’m very hopeful that we find a way to do something here in the near term and take that step forward. And still doing some other things out there, too," Mozeliak says. You can hear that full interview, here:
The post came after his Puerto Rican winter ball team, Criollos de Caguas, won the Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente Championship over the weekend. Molina was the team's designated hitter and made a big impact, as St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Derrick Goold wrote, here.
Molina, 38, has spent his entire professional career in the Cardinals organization since he was drafted in the 4th round of the 2000 MLB June Amateur Draft from Ladislao Martinez High School in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico.
He's drawn interest from a number of teams looking for a veteran backstop who can run anyone's pitching staff from behind the plate.
Molina came back from a battle with COVID-19 in 2020 and hit .262 with 4 home runs, 16 RBI and a .662 OPS in 42 games.
He earned his 2,000th hit last season and is just the sixth Cardinals players ever to do it, joining Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Rogers Hornsby, Albert Pujols and Enos Slaughter. He also sits on the Cardinals all-time, top-10 lists for WAR, games played, doubles, home runs and sacrifice flies.
His nine Gold Glove Awards are the most among active players in Major League Baseball and third-most all-time among catchers.
