ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — A lawsuit was filed Monday to stop the St. Louis City/County mask mandate.
Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt tweeted the threat Friday night, calling the mandate "insanity."
In his lawsuit, Schmitt argues the mandates are “arbitrary and capricious because they require vaccinated individuals to wear masks, despite the CDC guidance that this is not necessary.” His suit also questions mandating children to wear masks in school as they are less likely to become seriously ill from a COVID-19 infection.
Schmitt continued his assault on the mandate over the weekend by appearing on national media.
He also quoted 1800s French aristocrat and historian Alexis de Tocqueville in defending his threat of a lawsuit: “A man's admiration for absolute government is proportionate to the contempt he feels for those around him."
St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones took to Twitter to respond to Schmitt's planned lawsuit, calling it "frivolous".
Kansas City Mayor Quentin Lucas, who says it's not time for a mask mandate there, also responded to Schmitt's lawsuit threat.
Other politicians against the mandate are St. Louis County Councilmen Tim Fitch and Mark Harder, both Republicans. Democrat Rita Heard Days says she feels it'll be hard to enforce, and is undecided on if she'll support it.
