A proposal to rezone a 14-acre site in Midtown for "a 68,000 square foot, three-story outdoor recreation and entertainment center" was unanimously passed the city’s planning commission Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It would sit on land that's currently owned by Saint Louis University at Chouteau and Compton Avenues:

Currently, that land holds industrial lots, parking and a practice field for SLU Athletics.

Although the company hasn't announced anything, St. Louis officials confirmed to the Post-Dispatch that the plan is for Topgolf. They say the proposal is not seeking any tax incentives from the city.

According to FAA applications filed in June, construction on the site at Compton and Chouteau Avenues is set to begin in March of 2022 and be completed in December 2023. Area golfers will be teeing off into the skyline of downtown St. Louis, with the Arch in prime viewing position.

It would be a rare urban site for Topgolf. The company with more than 70 locations in five countries, opened its first location within a large city was the Atlanta site in 2015, which the company said it was "very special" at the time as the "first-ever truly urban location."

This is a story KMOX has been reporting on since 2019, when Topgolf Entertainment Group said it was "interested" in bringing a second location of its high-tech driving ranges to the St. Louis area. The first area Topgolf location opened in July 2018 in Chesterfield.

Also in 2019, then-Mayor Lyda Krewson teased some "breaking Topgolf news" about an "exciting addition to the City." A spokesperson said they could not give out any further information at that time.
