ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Neighbors in a residential area just south of Highway 40 off Hampton were startled by gunfire in the street around 12:30 p.m. Monday.
Police on the scene say one man was shot in the arm and and hospitalized, but he was "not cooperating" with investigators.
Shell casings littered the street near the intersection of Nashville and Devlin, a block east of Hampton.
Neighbor Carl Herberhold heard the shots.
"It was pop-pop-pop-pop-pop, and then another series apparently of the fourteen... it sounded semi-automatic," Herberhold said.
The barrage left a bullet hole in the vinyl siding of one man's front porch. He declined to comment.
But his neighbor just next door, David Smith, says he heard the gunfire from his backyard, and feared for the safety of his wife and young children.
"Scared and crazy... it's nuts around here lately," Smith said.
Police are still looking for a motive in the shooting. At least one car raced away from the scene after the shooting. There were no other known injuries apart from the man shot in the arm.
