While some assumed that an indictment and criminal charges being brought against a potential presidential candidate would only hurt the person’s chances of being elected, a recent increase in donations to former President Donald Trump appears to show the opposite.

This weekend, Trump’s 2024 campaign shared that it has seen an increase in donations and contributions since the president was charged in a New York court earlier this month. So far, his total money raised has eclipsed $34 million, according to his campaign.

Finance reports filed by the campaign over the weekend shared that the former president had raised over $18 million during the first three months of 2023 and $34 million overall.

According to a report from the Associated Press, in the 24 hours after Trump was indicted by a New York grand jury, his campaign raised $4 million alone.

The indictment involves several business-related crimes, with a total of 34 charges being brought against the former president by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office. The charges include allegations that Trump made hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

“The People of the State of New York allege that Donald J. Trump repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal crimes that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election,” District Attorney Bragg said in a press release detailing the charges.

The indictment seems to have been a spark for the former president, who has been working to capitalize off the recent attention, going as far as holding a speaking event from his Mar-a-Lago residence hours after he appeared in Manhattan court.

Latest polling also shows Trump is a favorite to receive the Republican nominee. However, the man who appears to be his main challenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has yet to announce a campaign.
