California Highway Patrol officers responded at 2:57 a.m. to the northbound freeway and the Del Amo Boulevard off-ramp where they learned the driver of the SUV slammed into a freeway sign before leaving the freeway and striking the fence, trapping the vehicle's occupants, CHP Officer Megan Curtis told City News Service.
One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and a second person was taken to a hospital by Long Beach Fire Department personnel in an unknown condition.
