2 dead in Wilmington crash

Two people died in a vehicle collision after the driver crashed into an excavator at a nearby construction site in Wilmington, police said Friday.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel and Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the collision at 10:32 p.m. Thursday at 1202 W. Anaheim St., between Marine Avenue and Avalon Boulevard, where they found the victims, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.

Police said the driver was traveling on Anaheim at a high rate of speed when they crashed into the excavator.

One of the victims was trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.

The LAPD's South Traffic is handling the investigation of the crash.
