Two brush fires that erupted Thursday have burned hundreds of acres in Riverside County, putting several areas under evacuation orders.

The bigger of the two blazes, the Bonny Fire, began Thursday afternoon near Running Springs. By Friday morning, it had burned 500 acres and was just 10% contained. A reception center has been set up at Hamilton High School for residents in the evacuation areas.

April Newman of Cal Fire Riverside County told KNX News that Animal Services is at the reception center to assist residents evacuating with animals.

Meanwhile, the Sunset Fire, which started Thursday evening near Banning, remains at just over 100 acres and is 70% contained. An evacuation order was put in place for an area in northwest Banning, but later downgraded to a warning.

“They were able to strengthen those containment lines without increasing acreage overnight, which is excellent,” Newman said.

The causes of both fires are under investigation.
