Four arrested in connection with killing of off-duty L.A. police officer

LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Four people have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer during an alleged armed robbery attempt in South L.A. on Monday.

According to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, three men and two women were detained in the Florence neighborhood of South L.A. Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of involvement in the death of 27-year-old Officer Fernando Arroyos. Four of the five were ultimately arrested.

Arroyos, a three-year veteran of the LAPD’s Olympic Division, was shot near the intersection of 87th and Beach streets Monday night. Investigators claimed the officer was looking at homes to purchase with his girlfriend when was approached by a black pickup truck carrying three suspects.

They got out, and an altercation ensued, followed by an exchange of gunfire. Arroyos was struck by one of the bullets.

No charges have been filed in connection with Arroyos’ killing. The five people detained have not yet been identified.
