A six-year-old boy in South L.A. was struck by a stray bullet Tuesday night during a Fourth of July celebration.
According to a neighbor who lives in the back house on the family’s property, the boy was wounded while playing outside with his mother and two older sisters. He said the fireworks going off were so loud, no one even heard the gunshot.
The boy’s mother scooped him up and rushed into the street, where she flagged down an LAPD officer near the intersection of San Pedro Street and Jefferson Boulevard. According to the LAPD, the officers called paramedics and the boy was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
“It looks like the boy was struck by a bullet,” Officer Rosario Cervantes confirmed to KNX News’ Jon Baird.
Homicide detectives are investigating to determine who fired the bullet into the air.
A neighbor said people in the area started setting off fireworks as early as Memorial Day, and it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference between fireworks and gunshots.
