LOS ANGELES (KNX) – While the ‘Fast and Furious’ movie franchise put Angelino Heights on the silver screen, some of it residents protested the filming of the new movie.

Residents and advocates for Streets Are For Everyone and Street Racing Kills took to the streets Friday, claiming the movie franchise promotes “street racing” and that it will encourage others to street race in the neighborhood.

“Street racing kills! Race on a track! Film in a studio!” the protesters chanted.

Damian Kevitt, executive director of Streets Are For Everyone, told City News Service that even though residents are paid for the “inconvenience” of filming, it’s the long term effects that matter more.

"How do you compensate for years of misery and being woken up night after night by screeching tires and burning rubber?" he said.  "And the effect it has on the physical and mental health of those residents? You can't compensate for that."

The area, according to the Los Angeles Times, is the home of Vin Diesel’s character, Dominic Toretto. It’s also where Bob’s Market, which owned by the Toretto family in the movie, is located. Filming is set to take place near the market.

Los Angeles Police Department announced last week it is working to reduce illegal street takeovers and street racing, including impounding the cars of anyone who participates in them.

NBCU Universal has not commented on the protests or filming at this time.
