Applications are now open for a guaranteed basic income program in the city of Los Angeles. The BIG-LEAP pilot program is giving 3,200 Angelenos an opportunity to receive $1,000 no-strings-attached money from the city every month for the next year.
The money comes with no requirements of how it should be used.
The application will begin at 8 a.m. Friday and remain open for 10 days, until 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 7. Councilman Curren Price has offered up his office as a command center to help L.A. residents apply.

At 12%, Price’s District 9 has the highest number of people who are living in poverty, according to a June 14 report on the BIG-LEAP program. More than a quarter of selected applicants will be residents of Price’s district, City News Service reports.
Poverty affects two out of every 10 residents in the city of Los Angeles, the city said in a statement, most of them are people of color and 31% are children.
BIG-LEAP, or “Basic Income Guaranteed - Los Angeles Economic Assistance Pilot,” was implemented to meet the needs of L.A. families who were impacted by the pandemic and are living in poverty.
