LOS ANGELES (KNX 1070)-- The children of a man shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy are suing the county and the deputy, according to City News Service.
The complaint for civil rights violations filed in L.A. federal court said the use of deadly force on 47-year-old Danan Malik Young was "unreasonable under the circumstances."
Young was shot and killed by LASD Deputy Kevin Walker on October 15. According to a news release by the department, a call was made regarding a female being held at gunpoint on 103rd Street and Figueroa Street. The department alleged that Young forced her into his SUV. The department also said Young allegedly shot fired the gun at a friend of the victim who was driving behind the car. Young also shot at another unoccupied car. Eventually, the woman escaped out of the car.
After Young crashed the car and ran toward deputies, Young was shot to death by Deputy Walker, who said he thought Young had a gun in his hand. It was revealed Young was holding a black COVID-19 mask. The news release said a loaded .38 caliber revolver was found under the driver seat of the car.
The lawsuit said Walker wasn’t given any kind of warning prior to being shot and that medical was delayed which caused Young physical and emotional suffering before his death.
The lawsuit also said Walker was not reprimanded for two incidents that both involved use-of-force in 2016 and 2020.
"LASD's supervisory and managerial officers were aware that defendant Walker and other deputies assigned to his station had dangerous propensities for abusing their authority and using excessive force," the lawsuit said, according to CNS.
