The victim, identified as Andrew Jelmert was riding his bike for AIDS/LifeCycle’s SoCal Day when he was struck by a car. He fell onto the road and died at the scene after suffering blunt force trauma, City News Service reported.

The suspect took off but was arrested by park rangers. Officials believe the suspect, who was only identified as a man in his 30s, was under the influence at the time of the crash.

AIDS/LifeCycle’s SoCal called the incident a tragedy.

“This is a senseless tragedy, and our hearts go out to everyone who is affected,” said Joe Hollendoner, MSW, the  incoming CEO of the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

“We revere each and every participant on AIDS/LifeCycle, who dedicate their time, energy, passion, and power to lift up a cause close to their hearts. We mourn with our community.”
