LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Shortly after the Los Angeles Dodgers were criticized by Catholic groups for inviting (then uninviting, and re-inviting) the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to their Pride Night celebration, the team has announced the relaunch of its Christian Faith and Family Day.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw made the announcement on Twitter Friday. He told the L.A. Times on Monday that the timing isn’t a coincidence.

“I think we were always going to do Christian Faith Day this year, but I think the timing of our announcement was sped up ... Yes, it was in response to the highlighting of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,” he said in an interview.

Kershaw further accused the charity organization of “making fun of other people’s religions.”

The Dodgers’ decision to honor the Sisters, who describe themselves as an “order of queer and trans nuns,” drew backlash from Catholics who claimed the group makes a mockery of Christians — something the Sisters emphatically deny.

"Our ministry is real. We promulgate universal joy, expiate stigmatic guilt and our use of religious trappings is a response to those faiths whose members would condemn us and seek to strip away the rights of marginalized communities," the organization said in a statement.

After widespread criticism from various LGBTQ groups and local politicians, the Dodgers apologized to the Sisters last week, re-inviting them to the June 16 Pride Night.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles issued a statement the next day expressing “disappointment, concern, anger, and dismay” over the reversal.

Brian Burch, president of political advocacy group CatholicVote, compared the newly-announced Christian Faith event to “putting a Band-Aid on a gaping wound.”

“Creating a ‘faith and family’ event does not balance the decision to honor a perverted, fake ‘nun’ group that exists to mock the Catholic religion,” he said in a statement.

The Christian Faith and Family Day will be held on July 30. More details are coming soon, the Dodgers said.
