SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KNX) – Efforts continued Monday to rescue San Bernardino County residents who have been stuck at home due to the snow.
San Bernardino County tweeted that county public works crews are working 24/7 to make roads “passable” for residents. Meanwhile, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said hundreds of firefighters, deputies, and CalTrans crew members attended a meeting this morning while on the way to help stranded residents.
The Red Cross set up two shelters, including one at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead.
David Fraust, a Red Cross volunteer, told KNX News he those who came to the shelter were taken there by sheriff’s deputies.
“..And if they come to the shelter here, we've got hot food,” he said. “We’ve got a place for them to spend the night, power up their cell phones. We've got a doctor and a nurse on site here for many though.”
Derek Hayes, who has been stuck in home in Cedar Glen, said he feels the county’s response to this snow storm wasn’t planned out.
“It seemed like they didn't realize this amount of snow was coming even though the residents did,” he told KNX News. “So, we're, we're awfully disappointed up here. We feel, I guess neglected, you know, like, who cares that we're up here stuck.”
Hayes added that he’s been able to get out of his house using snow shoes.
Donnie Strodman of Running Springs said he and wife, who has stage four cancer, became stuck in their truck as he was taking her to a medical appointment.
While the couple made it out on Friday, he called the experience frightening.
“Every day is precious to us,” he told KCAL News. “Every day is precious to her, and when you can't even get home, I can't even tell you what the stress level is like.”
