
EL MONTE, Calif. (KNX) – The family of the suspect in the El Monte shooting that left two police officers dead is speaking out.
Justin Flores, who also died in the shooting, was identified by his mother Lynn Covarrubias on Wednesday morning.
Covarrubias told The Los Angeles Times her son would often stay at the Siesta Inn motel and that he and his wife were separated. The two had a 7-year-old daughter.
Flores was at the Siesta Inn motel Tuesday evening when the two El Monte officers, Corporal Michael Paredes and Officer Joseph Santana, responded to a call of a possible stabbing.
Dina Flores, who was identified as Justin’s wife, told CBS L.A she in the motel with him during the shooting.
"I'm so deeply sorry. My condolences for saving me," she said.
"I'm so sorry. They didn't deserve that. They were trying to help me."
One woman who was the mother of one Justin Flores’ children spoke with KNX News and said a possible motive in the shooting was that Justin didn’t want to go back to prison.
Justin Flores was on probation at the time of the shooting, according to multiple reports. The Los Angeles Times reported that one day before the shooting, Flores’ probation officer filed a request for a revocation hearing. The newspaper cited two sources who claimed Flores’ had a probation violation after his girlfriend said he assaulted her.
