Actors and writers aren't the only ones on strike in Los Angeles - dozens of fast food workers marched outside an East L.A. McDonalds Thursday, protesting low pay, workplace violence, and other unsafe conditions.
Protestors told KNX News reporter Emily Valdez the story of one coworker, Berta Montez, who requested to go home sick but was told 'no' by management simply because there was no one to replace her.
She was forced to work 3-4 more hours before being allowed to clock out.
Though it was unclear if it was connected to the illness from that day, Montez died several weeks later. One protestor said, "The life of Berta had to be lost for us to be finally heard."
The workers are attempting to unionize, but they said they are having a hard time, with many workers not joining the strike out of fear and simply being unable to afford time away from work.
