LOS ANGELES (KNX) — A large fire was reported at a two-story commercial building in downtown Los Angeles on Friday. Firefighters responded to the 600 block of South San Pedro Street shortly after 6:30 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the L.A. Fire Department.

More than 100 firefighters were sent out to battle what was designated as a “major emergency fire,” according to LAFD.

The flames were extinguished in about 43 minutes, however.

"Firefighters made quick progress against fire encountered on the first floor; however the blaze had already extended from the (second floor) into the attic," LAFD’s Margaret Stewart said in a statement.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

"Preliminary information is this was an outside fire which extended in," Stewart said. "However, protocol for a major emergency fire calls for LAFD Arson investigators to conduct a cause investigation and they are en route to do so."
