LOS ANGELES (KNX) — More than 1,000 police, deputies and members of the public showed their support Wednesday in a fundraiser for the family of the late Los Angeles Police Officer Fernando Arroyos.

The 27-year-old was off-duty, house hunting in South L.A. with his girlfriend on Jan. 10 when three gang members attempted to rob them, fatally shooting Arroyos. His girlfriend was not injured.

Wednesday's fundraiser was held at the LAPD's Olympic Division station on Vermont Avenue and continues until 8 p.m. Proceeds will go toward his funeral expenses.

As the slain officer was killed off-duty, his family is responsible for his burial and other costs.

Officer William Castro, who was good friends with Arroyos, shared a story about how positive his friend was at work.

"I just came in upset [and tired] and he was like, 'Oh, well you gotta come to work with a smile!'" Castro said. "Something as little as that, right? It was so profound because I didn't' realize how happy-go-lucky he was."

Haylee Marie Grisham, 18, along with her alleged boyfriend, Luis Alfredo, 29 and Ernesto Cisneros, 22, were arrested in connection with Arroyos' death. The three men are alleged members of the F13 gang, according to LAPD.

Investigators believed Arroyos was targeted for a chain he was wearing around his neck at the time he was shot.
