LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Things are about to heat up across the Southland, with a heat wave expected to drive up temperatures across most western states by late this week and through the weekend.
National Weather Service forecasters said record-breaking heat is possible on Friday and Saturday in traditionally hotter areas of Lancaster and Palmdale, while coastal areas will still have the morning relief of "June Gloom" keeping things cooler.
An excessive heat watch will be in effect Friday morning through Saturday evening for the Los Angeles County mountains and the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys. Forecasters said "dangerously hot conditions" are anticipated in those areas, with temperatures reaching as high as 105 degrees.
"Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities," according to the NWS.
As usual during heat waves, forecasters urged people to drink plenty of fluids, seek out air-conditioned spaces and check in on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
"Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," forecasters warned. "This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."
