Some influential people in Southern California attempt to make a difference with everything they do, and our KNX Hero of the Week, Pastor Troy Vaughn, has spent nearly 30 years doing just that.
Much of that time was spent working in healthcare, and within the non-profit sector, but in the fall of 2020, Pastor Troy became President and CEO of the Los Angeles Mission, where he's helping the local homeless community.
He told KNX Heroes producer Heather Jordan, "I get to get up every day and see myself in the reflection of the men and the women that are now coming through the doors of the Los Angeles Mission."
Pastor Troy said a large part of his job is to show others what transformation can look like, and he is uniquely qualified to fit that role because this powerhouse of community betterment was once homeless himself.
He believes, "They're my past, and I'm their future," and so, "My purpose in life is to really make sure that people know that transformation is possible."

The experience of being homeless on Skid Row was "very traumatic," as Pastor Troy recalls it, so through the L.A. Misson, he aims to infuse dignity into the many services they provide.
Along with housing, the Mission offers opportunities, including employment training, skill development, and family unification.
Pastor Troy said they even hire alums of their Christian discipleship program who become leaders in the community that, like him, can motivate from a place of personal experience.
Pastor Troy Vaugh of the L.A. Mission is our Helpful Honda Hero of the Week.
