LOS ANGELES (KNX) — A miles-long span of 7th Street, beginning in Los Angeles’ Skid Row, has just begun its year-and-a-half-long beautification. A project championed by L.A. City Councilmember Kevin de León of District 14.
“We’re going to plant more than 80 trees for canopy, for shade, fix all the broken sidewalks,” de León said, speaking to KNX at the project’s groundbreaking.

“We’re [going to] have dedicated bicycles and scooter lanes that have protective physical barriers so bicyclists don’t have to worry if they’re gonna get hit by a vehicle.”
The $18.7 million plan will overhaul the 7th Street corridor, starting from San Pedro Street in Skid Row and ending westward at Downtown L.A.’s shopping area along Figueroa Street — an area just two blocks from L.A. Live and Crypto.com Arena.

“The project represents a major investment to deliver infrastructure improvements that are equitable to all residents,” de León’s office said in a statement Monday.
“Ensuring that one of L.A.’s poorest communities receives the same public investment and streetscape improvements as the neighboring community popular for being a shopping and restaurant destination among Angelenos.”
De León’s office said the project will include pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, lighting, bus islands and greenery.
Construction will begin at San Pedro Street and continue westward toward Figueroa.
Leading up to the project groundbreaking, de León’s said, “Council District 14, city staff, and the design team worked closely with community and business leaders to develop plans for a more beautiful and functional 7th Street, transforming it into a new boulevard that will safely serve pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users.”
