LOS ANGELES (KNX) — On Friday, three members of the Los Angeles City Council introduced a motion to request reports and recordings stemming from the killing of a 14-year-old girl by an L.A. police officer at a San Fernando Valley store last month.

Valentina Orellana Peralta was fatally struck by a stray bullet fired during a police response to a North Hollywood Burlington store on Dec. 23.

The motion was introduced by North Hollywood’s own representative on the council, Paul Krekorian, as well as fellow councilmembers Monica Rodriguez and Kevin de León. It directly requests two reports compiled by the LAPD — one on the status of the department’s internal investigation as well as its cooperation with two other external investigations into the incident; as well as a new report that outlines the LAPD’s practices to ensure the safety of bystanders during use-of-force incidents.

The motion also instructed the city’s Chief Legislative Analyst to report on best practices by other city police departments for reducing the chance of bystander injury.

The councilmembers also seek the release of any recordings captured by body cameras worn by officers during the shooting. An attorney representing Peralta’s family said last week they believe there was additional surveillance footage from the Burlington store that may shed light on the incident.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti said Thursday that his administration was looking “comprehensively” at Peralta’s death. The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division and Inspector General’s Office are also investigating, alongside the state Department of Justice.
