LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Los Angeles County reported 39 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest daily total in nearly four months.

The last day the daily death toll was as high was Sept. 22, when 41 people were reported to have died from the virus.

County health officials have described the spike in deaths as “troubling,” and likely reflective of an increase in diagnoses last month. They believe the daily death rate is likely to get higher in the coming weeks, before a surge attributable to the highly contagious Omicron variant is projected to subside next month.

Hospitalizations are also expected to increase in the near future. There were 3,912 COVID-19 patients reported hospitalized in L.A. County on Wednesday, up from 3,766 the day before. ICU admissions related to COVID-19 have also jumped, from 513 Tuesday to 536 on Wednesday.

In yet another sign that the spread of the virus is not slowing down, the county reported 40,452 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. It was the fourth day in a row that daily new cases crested 40,000.
