Just a week ahead of Taylor Swift’s upcoming series of concerts at SoFi Stadium, striking hotel workers are calling on the singer to postpone the shows until they get a new union contract.
“Your shows make our hotels a lot of money,” Unite Here Local 11 wrote in an open letter. “In Los Angeles, hotels are doubling and even tripling what they charge because you are coming. They also add junk fees on rooms, just like Ticketmaster does. Be we see none of it."
The “Swift Lift” is known to raise hotel rates and boost entire local economies when fans flock to town for concerts. The union says the economic impact is similar to holding several Super Bowls in a row.
But hotel workers, who have been without a union contract since the beginning of July, won’t reap the benefits. Staff walking the picket lines at several hotels Thursday asked Swift to join them in the fight for a fair deal.
“Taylor, we call on you to honor the struggle of women, hospitality workers across Los Angeles, and postpone your concert unless we have a living wage,” one striking worker said outside the Hyatt.
Members of Unite Here Local 11, which represents 15,000 workers at 65 hotels in L.A. and Orange counties, have walked off the job several times throughout July, demanding higher wages and better health and pension benefits.
