Hotel workers were on the picket lines at 7:00 AM sharp this Labor Day Monday, making noise that KNX News reporter Jon Baird said was probably loud enough to wake people up in the hotel and the apartments across the street.

The hotel workers have been holding strikes off and on since the 4th of July weekend. The union representing some 15,000 hotel workers at more than 60 hotels in the region says many employees are stuck taking two-hour commutes to work because they can't afford to live in Los Angeles.

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass told KNX News even her kids can't afford to live here.

Workers are trying to hammer out deals for higher wages with dozens of hotels, but union officials say the last negotiating session didn't go well.

So far, only one hotel has signed a new contract with the union. Maria Hernandez with Unite Here Local 11 told KNX News the last bargaining session with the hotels sort of fell apart, saying hotel representatives "Didn't give a single penny more towards wages towards health care. Nothing. They ended up walking out of the room."

Healthcare workers are also on the lines, call attention to this patient care crisis, saying they're seeing their patients facing delays in care. Kaiser employees are saying they've been dealing with chronic staffing shortages for quite a while now and claim that patients are forced to wait a long time to be seen by medical staff.
