LOS ANGELES (KNX) – An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department died over the weekend following an incident during a training exercise Thursday.

The department said Officer Houston Tipping, a bike instructor, was doing a training scenario that involved grappling with another officer when he fell and “suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury.”

He was taken to USCMC where died from his injuries on Saturday. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Shirley, and his girlfriend, Britney.

“True to his character of unending service, Officer Tipping is an organ donor,” the department said. “Over the next few days, his selflessness will save other lives.”

“We grieve this tragic loss,” Chief of Police Michel Moore said in a statement. “I am proud of Officer Tipping’s training classmates that immediately sprung into action, initiating CPD and other life saving measures as well as the work of the L.A.
Fire Department.”

The department is investigating the incident to see if “any additional measures” can be taken to avoid this incident in the future.
