LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Four Los Angeles police officers were honored Wednesday for rescuing a pilot after his plane crashed on railroads tracks in Pacoima, moments before a commuter train came by.

Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Joseph Cavestany and Officers Christopher Aboyte, Robert Sherock and Damien Castro were recognized for their efforts by Congressman Tony Cardenas Montague Charter Elementary School, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

On Jan.9, a plane crashed on some railroad tracks on Osborne Street. Sgt. Joseph Cavestany told the Los Angeles Daily News he saw the plane crash from his police his cruiser, calling it “very surreal.”

He and the other officers pulled the pilot – who was the sole occupant – from the airplane. Video shared by LAPD HQ showed the officers pulling out the pilot just seconds before a train collided into the wreckage.

“That man would probably be dead today,” Cárdenas said of the pilot, during the ceremony. “But, thank God, he’s alive.”
