LOS ANGELES (KNX) – There was confusion along San Vicente as officers from Los Angeles Police Department told those in the encampments they needed to move out.
KNX News’ Craig Fiegener said police told people that they were violating city laws by camping in the median. While the police said they were just informing them, the people there thought they were getting citations.
Craig spoke with Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, who represents that district. She said people there knew it was going to happen.
“People were told yesterday that the no camping on medians was going to start being enforced,” she said.
She added her team and Mayor Bass’ team felt it was “necessary” to start enforcing a “no pedestrian” rule on the median.
“Well, people aren’t going to be allowed to continue to camp on the median because it's not safe,” she said. “We're offering people motel services. If they don't take it, they're going to have to find a different place to set up their tent.”
When asked if people were being forced out, she said, “That is, that is not our intention and I haven't had a chance to talk to the police department and I think we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
Inside Safe did visit the encampment site on Wednesday, where around a dozen people accepted temporary housing.
