LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced her goal to have all homeless individuals living in interim housing by 2026.

She made the announcement on CNN’S “State of the Union” on Sunday.

"My goal would be, really, to end street homelessness," she said. "There'll still be people in shelters and interim housing, but to at least not have people dying on our streets."

Andy Bales, the president and CEO of the Union Rescue Mission, said it would be a “dream come true” if that happened.

“I'm with the mayor, interim housing, a huge network of interim housing and we can get everybody off the streets," he told KNX News. "There's no reason why we shouldn't have gotten everybody off the streets."

But some of her constituents remain skeptical of her plan.

“I think homeless isn’t going anywhere,” one woman told KNX News. “It could be contained, maybe, location-wise, but no, I don’t think it’s gonna make a difference.”

Inside Safe was launched December 2022 after Mayor Bass declared a state of emergency declaration on homelessness.

On Tuesday, Bass announced over 14,000 people have been moved off the street. Of those taken in, 1,323 were via the mayor's Inside Safe initiative, 8,726 were through LAHSA intakes, 1,397 used other tenant-based voucher programs, 1,591 used emergency vouchers.

In the $13 billion city budget that Mayor Bass signed last month, $1.3 billion will be used to address housing, including $250 million for the mayor's Inside Safe program. That will take effect July 1st.
